
Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
What is MMR
The MMR vaccine gives long term protection against measles, mumps and rubella.
These 3 infections spread easily between people and can lead to serious problems including meningitis and hearing loss.
2 Doses of MMR gives long term protection.
Mode of Transmission
Measles can be spread through close contact with someone who has measles. This can be from the air, cough, sneeze or touching things that has measles droplets.
A person with measles can spread the infection in the 4 days before they get the rash until 4 days after they develop their rash.
Method of Administration
MMR vaccine is given in 2 doses for the complete course and can provide long term protection.
MMR is given intramuscularly in the upper arm.
Symptoms of Measles
Measles usually start with cold like symptoms, including:
- high temperature
- runnny nose or blocked nose
- sneezing
- cough
- red, sore watery eyes
Small spots may appear inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips a few days later (usually only last a few days)
A rash can appear 2-4 days after the cold like symptoms
The spots of measles rash can sometimes be raised
Vaccination
Allow at least 2 weeks before travelling for vaccination to be effective
