Pharmacy Services

Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First Scotland is a service provided by your local Community Pharmacy to provide you with advice and medicines for the most common minor ailment conditions.

Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First at Westerhailes Pharmacy offers a local starting point for advice about minor illnesses. Visit our Westside Plaza branch in Edinburgh to speak to the team about your symptoms and the next step.

How Pharmacy First Scotland works

The NHS service supports people who live in Scotland or are registered with a Scottish GP practice. You do not usually need an appointment. The pharmacist can offer advice, provide suitable treatment or direct you to another healthcare professional when needed.

Common concerns include hay fever, constipation, eczema, head lice, athlete’s foot and a blocked nose. What is appropriate depends on your symptoms and individual circumstances. A consultation does not always result in medicine being supplied.

What to tell the pharmacy team

Explain when the problem started, what you have already tried and any medicines you take. Mention allergies and relevant health conditions. You can ask to speak in the consultation area if you would prefer privacy. The team may ask for your name, date of birth and postcode to record the consultation.

Planning your visit to Westside Plaza

Our branch is in the Westerhailes Centre, Edinburgh EH14 2SW. Before travelling, check the opening hours and directions. If you are unsure whether to visit, call 0131 275 4660 and explain what help you need. You can also browse our pharmacy services guide to find the relevant service information.

Questions about treatment and follow-up

Ask the pharmacist how to use any recommended medicine and what to do if the problem continues. If an assessment suggests that another service is more appropriate, follow the advice you are given. Specific products are not automatically available through the NHS service; the pharmacist will explain the options.

Read the Scottish Government patient guide for further information about access and the consultation process. For questions about this branch, contact Westerhailes Pharmacy.
