Emergency contraception after unprotected sex
Emergency contraception is a service available in most pharmacies to help prevent unwanted pregnancies in the event of unprotected sex.
There are two main emergency contraceptive pills: levonorgestrel (including Levonelle), taken within 72 hours (three days), and ulipristal acetate (including ellaOne), taken within 120 hours (five days). Seek advice as soon as possible; the pharmacist will assess which option is appropriate.
A copper coil (IUD) is the most effective emergency contraception and must be fitted by a trained clinician. Contact a sexual health service or GP promptly to discuss this option. If more than five days have passed, still seek advice promptly so a clinician can assess whether an option remains.
Tell the pharmacist when unprotected sex occurred, your usual contraception and any medicines you take. They may recommend treatment or refer you to another service. Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Read the NHS inform emergency contraception guide.
For other enquiries, browse our sexual health services or women’s health information. To ask about access to this service, contact Westerhailes Pharmacy.
