Typhoid Vaccine

What is typhoid

Typhoid fever is a serious systemic infection caused by the bacteria called Salmonella typhi.

Typhoid vaccination is typically given to those inteded to travel where there is a risk of typhoid exposure

Common Symptoms

Fever, headache, confusion, abdominal pain and constipation.

Method of Administration

Typhoid can be given orally as a 3 dose capsule (Vivotif) to adults and patients over 5 years

Typhoid vaccination is given intramuscularly as a single injection from 2 years and above.

Boosters

Vaccinations for Typhoid generally lasts for 3 years, if you intend to travel to an area with risk to this disease another vaccination is recommended.

Vaccination

Allow at least 2 weeks before travelling for vaccination to be effective

Transmission

Foecal-oral route (ingesting contaminated food and water)

Preventing Infection

Taking additional food/water precautions such as avoiding food prepared in places with potentially poor hygiene standards.

Water purification bottles are recommended.

Frequent hand washing and taking strict hygiene measures are recommended
