Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV is a viral infection that affects the skin and there are many different types. Some types of HPV infections can cause genital warts or cancer.

HPV vaccination enquiries at Westerhailes Pharmacy start with a discussion about your circumstances and previous vaccination history. Contact our Edinburgh team before arranging a visit so we can explain access, suitability and the next step.

What is HPV?

Human papillomavirus is a common group of viruses. Some types are linked with certain cancers and genital warts. Vaccination helps protect against specific types of the virus; it does not remove the need to attend cervical screening when invited.

Planning your HPV vaccination

The number of doses depends on factors including age and immune health. Tell the clinician about any doses you have already received and bring a record if you have one. The appropriate schedule should be confirmed during assessment rather than assumed from a general website guide.

Questions before you book

Ask whether you may be eligible for NHS vaccination before paying privately. Public programmes and catch-up arrangements have their own eligibility rules. Your GP practice, school vaccination team or sexual health service can advise on the route that applies to you.

For a private enquiry at this branch, ask the team about current availability, total cost and follow-up arrangements. Let us know if you need help finding the pharmacy or have questions about the appointment. Our contact page lists telephone details, directions and opening hours.

Prepare for your consultation

Write down any questions you want to discuss, including concerns about the vaccine and any previous reaction to vaccination. Bring relevant health information and a list of medicines. The clinician will explain what is recommended for you and what to expect afterwards.

Read the NHS vaccine guide for more information. You can also explore our sexual health services, private vaccination information and clinic guide. To discuss a visit, call 0131 275 4660.
