Mounjaro

What is Mounjaro?

• Mounjaro is a weight loss injecting drug
• Contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide
• Tirzepatide acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors involved in appetite and blood glucose regulation.
• The dosage is a once a week self-injecting pen
• Each pen has 4 dosages
• Weight loss varies between individuals; a particular result is not guaranteed.
• Patients must have a BMI of 30kg/m2 or more, or of at least 27kg/m2 and have a risk factor or a health condition that is affected by weight
• Mounjaro is injected under the skin of the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm
• Treatment starts at 2.5mg once weekly. Your prescriber will confirm each dose change.

How long does it take to see effects?

• Your prescriber will review your response and any side effects during treatment.
• If you have not lost at least 5% of your starting weight six months after reaching your highest tolerated dose, your prescriber should assess whether to continue treatment, considering your individual benefits and risks.

The Mounjaro pen

• Each pen is loaded with 4 fixed doses of 0.6mls
• Each week you are to inject a dosage of 0.6mls into your skin
• Upon receiving the pen, follow the instructions given to you by your pharmacist or the information leaflet given

Dosage

• Mounjaro is available in 6 strengths: 2.5mg, 5.0mg, 7.5mg, 10.0mg, 12.5mg and 15.0mg
• The usual starting course is 2.5mg weekly for four weeks, followed by 5mg weekly.
• If needed, your prescriber may increase the dose in 2.5mg steps after at least four weeks at the current dose. Maintenance doses are 5mg, 10mg or 15mg weekly.
• Missed doses: if a dose is missed, it should be administered as soon as possible and within 4 days after the missed dose. If more than 4 days have passed, the missed dose should be omitted and the next dose should be administered as planned. Patients can then resume their regular once weekly schedule.
• If you miss more than one dose, ask your prescriber how to restart. Do not adjust the dose yourself.
• The day of weekly administration can be changed if necessary as long as the time between two doses is at least 3 days (more than 72 hours).
• After selecting a new dosing day, once-weekly dosing should be continued.

Mounjaro price guide

The starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5mg. Depending on the response of the individual, a step-up dose is required when moving up strengths. Prices have been updated from 1st September 2025.
