Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes. Risk areas include parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South and Central America, and Trinidad in the Caribbean. Check advice for your exact destination.
Vaccination may be recommended for travel to a risk area or required for entry to some countries. A designated yellow fever vaccination centre must assess your suitability and certificate requirements.
Severity
Can cause death if severe symptoms occur.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms are:
- High temperature
- headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Muscle pain including backache
More severe symptoms can affect the liver and kidneys. In this phase people are more likely to develop jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain and vomiting.
Administration
A single dose provides lifelong protection for most people. A small number of travellers may need another dose after an individual assessment.
Preventing Infection
Seek advice at least 10 days before travel. The vaccine is not suitable for everyone, and some people need specialist advice. Ask the vaccination centre to assess your health, previous vaccinations and travel plans.
Reducing mosquito bites
Risk is reduced by eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites
Appropriate clothing to prevent bites
Use of insect or mosquito repellents (containing DEET or picaridin)
Use of insecticide-treated bed nets
